The Genius Quilt

The Quilt History

In 1999, 4 Multnomah County Health Department administrators retired (Billi, Jan Sinclair, Mary Lou & Dwayne Prather) and Friends of Public Health (now Community Health Partnership) was borne. The quilt was made as a fund raiser for this new adventure.

A small, dedicated core group decided to make a quilt a year to continue to raise funds for Community Health Partnership who uses it to fund things like student loans, the Special Needs Grants, etc. Each year, a request for quilters is sent out to all Health Department staff. Multnomah Health Department Employees, family members, friends, public health people who have retired or are from other counties come together on a Saturday to cut, sew, steam press and build a quilt top. The core group puts on the finishing touches and gets the top ‘quilted’.

The group has gotten together six times to make seven quilts; one year a smaller lap blanket was made from the quilt’s remnants and used as the next year’s donation.
